Description:
In 1992 Hopkins scientists isolated sulforaphane from broccoli as the principal booster (inducer) of an elaborate network of protective (so-called phase II) enzymes that defend all aerobic cells against the constant damage of reactive oxygen (oxidative stress), DNA damaging chemicals (electrophiles), inflammation, and radiation. These damaging processes are the major causes of cancer and many chronic degenerative diseases.Sulforaphane is the most potent naturally occurring inducer of phase II enzymes, including quinone reductase and glutathione. Moreover, sulforaphane can reduce the incident of a number of forms of tumors and induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in various experimental models.
